Reporting to the Executive Vice President, and Head, Research, Development and Medical Affairs (RDMA), ImmunoGen is currently looking for a Chief Scientific Officer. This individual will lead the vision, strategic development and day-to-day operations of ImmunoGen’s research, late preclinical and early clinical development organization. As a key member, the new CSO will work with the RDMA leadership team to ensure that investments and portfolio decisions surrounding science and technology align with the company’s long-term vision and strategic plan.
Responsibilities
- Establishing the Company’s strategic Research roadmap and providing exemplary scientific input into the Company’s research and development initiatives and programs in order to support the overall corporate strategy set by the CEO and the Board of Directors.
- Lead and mentor our scientists to facilitate their best efforts to successfully advance our research programs and promote individual professional development.
- Advocating for investment in emerging scientific/platform/asset opportunities aligned with the Research strategy with the RDMA leadership team and driving iteration of that strategy based on research insights, both within and outside of Immunogen.
- Provide regular presentations in various company forums including company, Board of Directors meetings and external business and scientific discussions.
- Establishing and maintaining the highest quality and scientific rigor reflected in the scientific foundations of the Company’s drug discovery, translational, and early development processes and work product (including adherence to GLP where appropriate).
- Managing research and early development efforts such that budgetary, technical, and human resources are allocated properly for the achievement of business objectives.
- Recruiting, leading, managing, developing, and retaining outstanding scientific talent.
- Representing the Company at relevant scientific gatherings, symposia, and conferences, and in other venues such as those related to business development opportunities, policy, trade, or platform forums, thereby building its relationships and reputation with other global scientific leaders, key opinion leaders and other important influencers.
- Directing the discovery and early development research programs through:
- Providing exemplary overall scientific leadership in identifying and evaluating drug discovery opportunities and drug candidates, advancing them into IND-enabling studies and ultimately proof of concept early clinical development.
- Advancing the Company’s scientific leadership in ADCs in particular and oncology generally.
- Seeking and initiating partnerships with academic investigators/institutions and biopharmaceutical company partners, and others as appropriate.
- Directing research that develops and builds upon and expands the Company’s intellectual property.
- Supporting the clinical development of the Company’s new product pipeline by evaluating and identifying complementary technologies, translational science, and companion diagnostic development with the intention of accelerating pipeline advancement and new product commercialization.

Qualifications
- The ideal candidate will have an outstanding track record of success in discovering, developing, and/or identifying biopharmaceutical drugs in the field of oncology which address unmet medical needs and which reach the marketplace.
- A PhD in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, or a closely related/relevant field.
- A highly recognized and respected global scientific leader with executive presence and 15+ years of post-doctoral and industry experience focused in biologics and Oncology.
- Proven track record of success in creating and articulating a scientific vision and then successfully designing and leading an organization to achieve it.
- The interpersonal maturity to achieve results through leading a matrixed, collaborative team of other highly credentialed, senior scientific executive leaders.
- Demonstrated capacity to mentor and develop next-generation leadership talent.
- Possessing a high degree of familiarity with the validation of drug targets and the exploratory biopharmaceutical drug discovery and development processes.
- Experience in entering into and managing collaborative relationships and strategic alliances with pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, and other relevant partners.
- High awareness of current, overarching scientific trends that are driving innovative drug discovery pathways and novel approaches to Oncology drug discovery and development.
- Consistent publication record in international, peer-reviewed journals across therapeutic areas, with particular prominence in Oncology. Deep relationships and networking skills with experts in academia & industry, including a solid record of maintaining and developing these relationships with key opinion leaders and investigators in various areas of Oncology.
- Skilled in multi-tasking and simultaneously driving multiple programs and portfolios in various stages of drug discovery.
- Excellent conceptual thinking, imagination, innovative skills and the ability to integrate and synthesize information and data from diverse fields of research and drug development.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- Creative – able to identify and pursue new opportunities.
- Strong oral and written communications skills as well as public presentation experience and skills which convey a high intellect, seniority and stature.
- Overall business judgment and understanding which includes experience in protecting intellectual property, conducting due diligence, and participating in business development and technology/product licensing processes.
- Fiscal responsibility, including the ability to achieve commercial return from research and development investments.
- Lead and mentor our scientists to facilitate their best efforts to successfully advance our research programs and promote individual professional development.
